Is it just me, or does every new scientific “discovery” just lead to another series of “mysteries”? So after years of research and millions of taxpayer dollars, scientists announced — are ya ready? — that Black Holes Sprout Galaxies. Yup. I bet you’ve been holding your breath for that one.
For decades, astrophysicists have wondered what came first — the black holes lying at the center of so many big galaxies or the galaxies that feed them. Well, it’s black holes, by a nose. From the Times:
The problem with that idea, according to the scientific team that presented the findings Wednesday at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, is that nobody has come up with an explanation for how a black hole could sprout a galaxy.
“That is hard to imagine,” said Chris Carilli of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
“Hard to imagine” indeed! Now they’re asking me to believe that black holes can regurgitate entire galaxies. Gimme a break! Next they’ll ask me to reckon that something came from nothing. Oh wait, they’ve already asked me to believe that…
So it’s official — the egg came first. My only question is, um, Who made the egg?
