I heard that champagne ages well. Which is probably good for Joe Torre and the Dodgers. You see, they’ve had the bubbly on ice for the last week, ready to celebrate clinching the NL West. Problem is, they played three of the worst teams in the league.
The Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and San Diego Padres are the dregs of Major League Baseball. Nothing like a series with these guys to recoup your team’s mojo. Lucky for the Dodgers, three of their four last series were with these bums. Uh, think again.
The defending NL West champs lost all three series. So is this how you gear up for a pennant run?
Call me a killjoy, but this late-season collapse seems all too familiar. How many times in recent years have the wheels fallen off the Dodgers’ post-season drive? The only way I might feel confident about the Dodgers playoff chances, is if they sweep the Rockies this weekend. But even then, that will make the Blue Crew only 5-5 over their last 10 starts. And the chances that Colorado will roll over (after winning 7 of 10 and sweeping their last series), are slim.
Oh well, there’s always next year. Oh, wait! This one isn’t over yet. Or is it?
